You could join the search for diamonds! A number of companies have made money out of diamond exploration / mining in and around Ontario and Quebec. There are a couple of such companies listed below.
A company called ‘True North Gems’ has found sapphires on Baffin Island as well as other gemstones in the Yukon and Greenland. Whether there are any such stones in Ontario, I wouldn’t know.
You are probably best to look for diamonds. Look at those first two links. Diamond exploration companies analyse glacial moraine trails for diamond indicator minerals such as chromium rich diopside and pyrope garnets and then follow the trails of these minerals back to their source, which on some occasions leads them to a diamond bearing deposit.
